I recently got the chance to sit down with smoking hot fitness model and actress Mindy Karuk to find out how she built her body and what she has going on.
Q: Tell us more about yourself. Who are you? How long have you been training and what are your goals and aspirations in the fitness industry?
I am a WBFF Athlete, Bio-X Performance Nutrition Sponsored Athlete, Fitness Model, Freelance Writer, Make-Up Artist and Actress! Is that enough? lol. I have come to terms with the fact I am a Jane of all trades it seems and I couldn’t be happier!! I love to keep myself busy and motivate others along the way! I have been training since about 2001 and have been competing since 2005! I would love to be an inspiration to anyone who has ever wanted to follow their dreams and goals! People who follow their passion and goals inspire me so much!! You can almost touch the energy of that person when you hear them talk about their passion!! I love that!! To become a household name in the fitness industry would sum up everything for me…that would be incredible!
Q: How did you get into modeling and get work? Did you just get some professional pictures done and started networking?
I joined some modeling sites and set up a profile. I started shooting with local photographers to build up my portfolio, I learned so much about proper posing and about myself! I basically hunted out opportunities….living in a smaller city, you had to make those opportunities. You couldn’t sit around and think that the work would come to you. Networking is a huge part of it!! I have made incredible contacts throughout the years. One of those contacts was Fitness Photographer Larry Niven, now living in Vancouver I now not only get to shoot with him, I’m also his Make-Up Artist for photo shoots!
I train 5 days a week at Gold’s Gym. I’m lucky that my Boyfriend is a Personal Trainer and he works out with me to ensure that I am pushing myself to the limit! Thank you Chris!! My Personal Trainer is Darren Mehling of Freak Fitness out of Winnipeg Manitoba. We use online training and the results are constantly changing for the better!! We incorporate plyos into my training scheduleand include cardio 4 to 5 days also. When I’m training for a competition I will usually give myself 14 weeks to prep. Currently I am training for the WBFF BC Championships on April 17th 2010 that will be held at the River Rock Casino in Richmond, BC!! This will be the second time that I have competed with Paul Dillett’s WBFF, it’s the leader in Organizations right now and is sweeping the Country! My last competition was in July at the WBFF Alberta Championships where I placed in the Top 10 for the Fitness and Bikini Diva Categories!
Q: What type of diet do you use? Low carb and high protein?
Generally in the “off season” I don’t go too low carb. I utilize slow burning carbs like yams and brown rice. I consume high protein all year round and make sure I take flax seed oil with my meals. I supplement with Bio-X Power Whey Isolate after workouts.
Q: What are you thoughts about cardio? Are you a fan of low intensity or high intensity?
I love high intensity cardio!! I crank up the ipod to some Tiesto/Armin Van Buuren/ A State of Trance and I’m good to go!! lol
Q: You’ve gotten some acting work. Where does someone look to start if they’d liker to act? Do they have to find agent?
Yes I have, and I would definitely love more!! Taking a reputable acting class is a great way to see if acting is for you. It requires much energy and it’s something you really have to give a lot of yourself to emotionally. Finding an agent that will get you work in specific areas of interest is best. You have to be serious about it, and give 110% if that’s what you want to do!
