Here’s a recent reader question on a supplement that I love N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC).
“I’ve been hearing a lot about NAC lately. I hear it’s a great antioxidant but what else can it do?”
It really has a whole host of benefits to be exact. It’s a great antioxidant as you mentioned as it’s a raw material for our bodies main antioxidant glutathione. It can also reduce muscle soreness post workout and recent research has shown its benefits for helping connective tissue. Most people take a joint supplement for this same benefit so NAC is a cheaper alternative.
The most exciting research surrounding N-Acetyl-Cysteine benefits is that for fat loss. It is a very strong fat metabolizer and can detoxify heavy metals and cigarette second hand smoke. Heavy metals have been linked to insulin resistance which increases stomach fat. Most people have mercury fillings in their mouths and mercury can reduce your thyroid hormone. NAC is very potent at reducing the damage that mercury can do.
