I recently talked about the Consumer Reports look at heavy metals in protein powders but now they have release a report detailing 12 dangerous supplements.
The dangerous supplements according to consumer reports are the following.
The dozen are aconite, bitter orange, chaparral, colloidal silver, coltsfoot, comfrey, country mallow, germanium, greater celandine, kava, lobelia, and yohimbine. The FDA has warned about at least eight of them, some as long ago as 1993.
Of the entire 12 listed above, I’ve only ever used and recommended yohimbine and to be honest, it works and it works well. Is it dangerous? Not in my personal experience and the experience of my clients. Are you following a good fat loss diet? If not then you need to get on one and don’t worry about supplements.
Do you have high blood pressure? Then you shouldn’t take yohimbine but who doesn’t do their research before they try new supplements? Especially ones like bitter orange and yohimbine that are stimulants.
So why are their dangerous supplements according to Consumer Reports?
There reasons are the following…
- We have identified a dozen supplement ingredients that we think consumers should avoid because of health risks, including cardiovascular, liver, and kidney problems. We found products with those ingredients readily available in stores and online.
- Because of inadequate quality control and inspection, supplements contaminated with heavy metals, pesticides, or prescription drugs have been sold to unsuspecting consumers. And FDA rules covering manufacturing quality don’t apply to the companies that supply herbs, vitamins, and other raw ingredients.
- China, which has repeatedly been caught exporting contaminated products, is a major supplier of raw supplement ingredients. The FDA has yet to inspect a single factory there.
Now who is the average consumer in most nutrition and supplement stores across the country? People that don’t do their research. If you knew how many house wives that I’ve seen look for ephedra based products when all they have to do is slightly switch up their diet and they’ll get results, you’d go nuts.
