I think we tend to think too much about burning fat. We’re always looking for new or different ways to burn bodyfat and new supplements that rev up our metabolism so hard that we lose focus. In reality, there’s only 5 times during the day that we burn calories.
1) During exercise
Now this depends on the type of exercise that you do. If you haven’t gotten off the couch in 2 years then walking will do the trick. If you’re in the gym every day then you should know that you need to increase the intensity. This is the simplest form of buring bodyfat. You exercise hard relative to your condition levels and you burn fat.
2) After exercise
Research has shown that post exercise, the bodies energy requirements remain as high as they were during training. This has been called various things but the term I like the most is “afterburn”. This effect can be elevated for upwards of 24 hours post exercise depending on the intensity of training.
Think about weight training as breaking down your muscles. You have to break them down to build them up. Well the repair process is very calorie consuming. Research has shown that in certain cases it may take up to 7 days to repair and recover from workouts. All this time the food you’re eating is going to repair muscle tissue which means you’re burning fat.
4) By eating metabolism boasting foods
Certain foods actually raise your metabolism more then others since they cause your body to digest and metabolize them different. Protein is the biggest example. When you compare protein to carbohydrates and protein to fat you’ll notice that your body burn upwards of twice as many calories to digest protein as it does carbohydrates or fat. Now think about eating a high protein diet every day. After all you’ll notice a big effect.
5) By building more muscle
When you train hard and eat right your body breaks down muscle tissue then rebuilds it. It costs your body more calories to maintain muscle mass then anything else. Studies have shown that 1 pound of muscle mass may burn up to at least 50 extra calories per day.
